Thrust Flight 

Airport: Conroe-North Houston Regional (CXO)

Admittedly, we might be a little biased. But Thrust Flight’s newest base at Conroe is simply the best flight school in Houston if you’re looking for professional pilot training and thinking of an aviation career. 

The school has partnership and pathway programs with Envoy, Spirit, SkyWest, Republic, Air Wisconsin, and Avelo. 

It’s important to note, however, that Thrust Flight only offers the professional pilot program at this time. 

If you want to get your Private Pilot or a single rating, you’ll want to check out one of the other outstanding Houston area flight schools. 

Texas Flight 

Airport: Spring, Hooks Memorial Airport (DWH)

Texas Flight has been listed as a distinguished flight school by the AOPA Flight Training Experience Award for many years running. 

They operate a fleet of Cessna and Piper aircraft out of the Hooks Airport in northwest Houston. In addition to individual ratings for Instrument and Multiengine, Texas Flight offers Private and Commercial training.

Coastal Skies Aero Club

Airport: Pearland Regional (LVJ)

The Coastal Skies Aero Club has two locations: Pearland Regional south of Houston and Gulf Coast Regional farther south near Angleton. 

The club is a little different from traditional flight schools. 

The idea is that a pilot can have their pick at scheduling any of the club’s Piper and Cessna planes for a monthly fee. The club has instructors on staff to get you checked out or to get beginners started with their private certificate.

If you want to rent planes for personal flying after you get your license, joining the club from the beginning is worth checking out. The club offers very reasonable rates and dues. 

The Flight School, Inc.

Airport: Spring, Hooks Memorial Airport (DWH)

Despite obvious points lost in the creative name category, The Flight School is one of the top-rated flight schools in the area. 

The school offers basic and advanced training. They also offer rotorcraft ratings in their Robinson R22 helicopter. They also offer special training like complex and tailwheel endorsements, spin training, and aerobatics instruction. 

One of the school’s other appeals is its varied fleet of aircraft. The school has a rental V-tail Bonanza, a Citabria taildragger, and some very nice-looking Pipers and Cessnas.

Anson Aviation 

Airport: Sugar Land Regional (SGR)

Anson is based at the Sugar Land Airport in southwest Houston. In business since 2003, it has offered training, aircraft rentals, and aircraft storage and maintenance for owners. 

Its fleet includes Cessna 172s, an 182, and a Piper Seminole twin. Anson is partnered with Perdue University to conduct flight training for its online Bachelor of Science in Professional Flight or Aviation Management programs.

Flying Tigers Flight School

Airport: Ellington Airport (EFD)

Ellington is home to Flying Tigers, a flight school offering Part 61 and 141 pilot training. They offer all training, from Private to Flight Instructor—including Multiengine and Commerical. They operate a fleet of Cessnas and two Grumman Cheetahs, which are fun-flying airplanes.

Flight training will require you to commute to the airport several times a week, so picking a school on the other side of Houston might be a real drag.
