What happens on a private pilot checkride?
The checkride is the FAA practical test. It has two parts: an oral exam where an examiner asks you questions on the ground, and a flight portion where you demonstrate maneuvers and decision-making. Passing it earns your certificate.
A Designated Pilot Examiner conducts the checkride.
The oral portion covers regulations, weather, systems, and flight planning through conversation and scenario questions.
The flight portion has you fly maneuvers, navigation, and emergency procedures to FAA standards.
Your instructor won’t sign you off until you’re ready, and thorough preparation is the best predictor of a smooth checkride.
