Learn to become an airline pilot

Newport News Flight School

Thrust Flight is the authorized flight training provider for Hampton University’s Department of Aviation. Train for your Private, Instrument, Commercial and Flight Instructor certificates at Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport in brand new, air conditioned aircraft.

Whether you’re a Hampton student flying for your degree or a career changer starting from zero, our Hampton Roads campus is your path to the airlines.

Become an Airline Pilot in Hampton Roads

Our Newport News campus runs two paths to the same place. Hampton University students earn their certificates and ratings as part of an accredited four-year degree. Everyone else trains through the Zero Time to Airline® program, our accelerated route from no experience to Certified Flight Instructor.

Either way you train in new Piper Archer TX and Piper Seminole aircraft with air conditioning and Garmin G1000 avionics, under the same FAA Part 141 certificate and the same standards we hold at every Thrust Flight campus.

Thrust Flight also holds Examining Authority. Checkrides are conducted in house instead of waiting on an outside DPE, which keeps your training on the same calendar as your coursework.

Newport News/Williamsburg International is a tower controlled airport with two long runways and scheduled airline service, in the middle of the busy Hampton Roads airspace. You will be talking to controllers from your first flights.

Fly for Your Degree at Hampton University

Hampton University’s Bachelor of Science in Flight Education is accredited by the Aviation Accreditation Board International, and Thrust Flight is the flight training provider behind it.

You take your aviation coursework on Hampton’s campus and fly with our instructors at Newport News/Williamsburg International. By graduation you hold a bachelor’s degree along with the Private, Instrument, Commercial, Multi-Engine and Flight Instructor credentials you need to start building hours and get hired.

That is the combination airlines look for: a four year degree and professional flight training delivered to Part 141 standards.

Flight Training at PHF: The Airspace Advantage

Newport News/Williamsburg International is a tower controlled airport with scheduled airline service. Students work with live ATC on every flight from the first lesson. Radio work is one of the harder skills to pick up late, and students who train at quiet uncontrolled fields tend to build it slower.

The Hampton Roads airspace adds to that. Norfolk Approach handles the traffic here, Langley Air Force Base sits about seven miles away, and Norfolk International is twenty miles southeast. Learning to operate in that environment transfers directly to regional and major airline flying.

The airport has two runways: an 8,003 foot grooved asphalt primary (7/25) and a 6,526 foot concrete crosswind runway (2/20). Field elevation is 42 feet MSL. Coastal Virginia gives you four seasons and enough weather variety to train in, without the long low-IFR stretches that slow progress further north.
