A Structured Program With Real Financial Support
Thrust Flight runs an FAA-approved Part 141 program that takes you from zero experience to airline-ready in an average of 14 months. Unlike Part 61 schools where the meter runs until you’re done, our program has a defined curriculum, built-in milestones, and a total cost you can see before you start.
On top of that, scholarships from organizations like AOPA, EAA, and the CloudDancer Foundation exist specifically to offset that number. And financing options through Sallie Mae, Stratus, and Climb mean most students aren’t paying out of pocket at all, they’re managing a monthly payment that looks very different once they’re earning a regional airline salary.
The question isn’t whether this is affordable. The question is which combination of options makes it work for you.

How Students Actually Pay for Training
Flight training is an investment. Here’s what the financial timeline looks like for most Thrust Flight students.
The math changes when you’re making $100K+. A loan that feels heavy at $0/year income feels completely different when you’re collecting a full airline salary. Most students finance between $800–$1,400/month, and that’s before refinancing once you’re established.
Refinancing with an airline salary can mean a lower interest rate, a lower monthly payment, your cosigner fully released from the obligation, and freed-up credit to qualify for a mortgage or other major purchases. Programs like the American Airlines Credit Union pilot refinance even offer cash back and 90-day payment deferral when you refi.
I sat on the idea of flight school for almost two years because I couldn’t get past the price tag. When I finally called Thrust, they walked me through Sallie Mae and I realized my monthly payment would be around $1,100 — less than my buddy’s car payment. I’m past my commercial rating now, I’ve got a conditional offer from SkyWest, and I wish I hadn’t waited so long.
