What are the Requirements for a Sallie Mae Loan?

To qualify for a flight school loan with Sallie Mae you must first be a US Citizen or US permanent resident. You must also be enrolling in the airline career program, Zero Time to Airline®. A Sallie Mae loan cannot be used to pay for an individual rating.

Steps to complete your application

Click the button above or below and fill out the form on our website.

After you submit the form, you’ll be sent to the Sallie Mae website where you’ll go through the application. Below are some of the questions you’ll need to fill out at the beginning of your application:

Who are you? – You’ll select Student. At the end of your application, you’ll have the option of adding a cosigner (something we highly recommend)
Which of these describes the type of program your loan is for? – Select Career Training School
After making the above selection the name of the school should automatically fill in but if it doesn’t, select Texas and then search Thrust Flight and the school name should appear for you to select.

From there, you’ll go through a number of different sections in the application. It will require your basic information (name, contact information, address(s), etc.).

There are a few other specific pieces of information you’ll also need. Those are each detailed below:

School Information section:

In this section, you will select Certificate, Airline (Career-oriented), Full Time, and Certificate/Continuing Ed (At this time our Zero Time to Airline program is full time only).

Let’s figure out how much you want to borrow section:

For this section, you’ll need to use dates you’ve received from your admissions advisor.

The first date will be your program start date. This can be adjusted later if needed.

Under “loan period ends,” set the date you received from your admissions advisor as the end date of your program. This can be adjusted later.

The expected graduation date will be the same month as the program’s end date.

Under the cost of attendance section, Sallie Mae will auto-fill an average number here, however, this can be adjusted based on your program and your needs. If you received a number from your admissions advisor enter that number here. You can also use the calculator below to help you determine how much to apply for. After you submit your application our team will review.

Employment & Financial Information and Personal Contacts sections:

From here you’ll share more basic information about previous employment and about your current financial situation.

After these are completed you’ll have the option to add a cosigner.

Cosigner:

We strongly recommend people apply with a cosigner, especially if they don’t have a long credit history. It is much more likely that your application will be approved if you apply with a strong cosigner.

Final Steps of the Application

You’ll then sign a few disclosure documents with Sallie Mae. Once everything is complete our team will be notified of your application. Within a few minutes, you should know if you’ve been approved for a loan or not.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Flight Training Loan

Do I need a cosigner?

A cosigner is not required for a Sallie Mae loan if you qualify on your own. However, if you have limited credit history we strongly recommend having a creditworthy cosigner as it will significantly improve your chances of getting approved.

What is the interest rate for a Sallie Mae pilot training loan?

Sallie Mae offers both fixed-rate loans and variable-rate loans. Specific interest rates are based on a number of variables. Once you complete your application Sallie Mae will let you know what your options are. To see the current interest rate ranges visit Sallie Mae’s website here.

When filling out your application for a loan from Sallie Mae you’ll need to select our school. You can do so by searching for Thrust Flight after selecting Texas as the state or by searching for our administrative code.

Can a Sallie Mae loan be used to pay for a private pilot license (or any other individual rating)?

At this time a Sallie Mae loan can only be used for a career training program such as our Zero Time to Airline program. It cannot be used for an individual rating.
